On The Way

well, it's 3 a.m.
but I had to check
and sure enough, you're up here on the forward deck,
staring out ahead into the mist
with the railing tightly gripped between your pale white fists.
You worry what's up ahead
and if the water's very deep,
and the moon's not out, so you cannot see
and you cannot sleep.

The ocean groans
and it's hard to hear
but there's an engine turning somewhere,
have no fear.
I'm just a passenger
so I only know so much
but I can feel that sweet vibration underneath my touch.
Where we started from
is now so many miles away,
and the end of the journey may be further still
but we're on the way.

In a perfect world
maybe we could see
the unfolding of things
like time lapse photography.
Orbit overhead
and just get a sense
of life beyond our own particular garden fence.
But down here between the blades
you can get lost in your own backyard
terrified that the lawn mower might not be very far.

So, though it's dark outside
despite how it feels
there's a course and there's a force that stands behind the wheel.
With every second's tick,
with every verse of song,
well, we may not have moved too far,
but we have moved along.
Where we started from
is now so many miles away,
and the end of the journey may be further still
but we're on the way.
