Othello's Ear

You watch their face as they hear the tale
slip under their fingernails.
A little bullshit in a veil of truth,
A push to pull a healthy tooth.
You harry round an unsuspecting friend
until a thread of doubt extends.
You worry at it,
play the confidant
until it yields the fruit you want.

It's your revenge,
for what, it's not clear.
If they don't want to know,
well then they don't have to hear.
It's just a little whisper in Othello's ear,
and satisfaction's guaranteed.

You never found someone you could trust,
so you afflict the rest of us.
You only use your talents as your bait.
You bide your time.
You watch.
You wait.

It's not enough for you to just break the ties.
I really think you're not happy
'till there's hate in their eyes.
I did my best, and what did I get?
Ten years to live with my regrets.

(chorus)

If you believed I was the devil
then why on earth did you keep coming by?
To save my soul by turning it to jade?
Or just to see what dent you'd made?

I was your friend.
Believe it. It's true.
Not everybody thinks like you do.
But there is such a thing as too many times,
and you, my friend, have crossed that line.

(chorus)
